Our story
The Bush Inn story
The Bush Inn name goes back to 1865, when William Coles Webb opened the original Bush Inn Hotel in Upper Riccarton. Webb was a horse trainer, and the hotel had stables at the rear. It served travellers on the routes between Christchurch, the West Coast and Ellesmere.
Sport was part of the Bush Inn's early life: horse and bicycle events, hunting parties and other local gatherings started or finished there. Later, the hotel was frequented by Wigram airmen during the Second World War and by university students after the University of Canterbury moved to Ilam.
Today, the Bush Inn Tavern carries that local name forward at 364 Riccarton Road, bringing people together for live sport, food and a drink.
